Representative Ruestman Promotes Safety at New Roundabout
JOPLIN – Representative Marilyn Ruestman (R-131), MoDOT district engineer Becky Baltz and Quapaw Tribe Chairman John Berrey gave an update on the progress of the area’s first two-lane roundabout today. Located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 166 and Greenwood Drive, a half mile north of Exit One on I-44, this roundabout, is scheduled to be open June 30th. No public funds were used on this project. The land acquisition, design and construction were paid for entirely by the Quapaw Tribe.
Representative Ruestman’s Office and MoDOT would like to offer the following facts and safety tips:
FACTS
- Roundabouts are safer. Traditional signal intersections have 22 possible vehicle-collision sites, while roundabouts reduce that number to eight. This can result in 75 percent fewer accidents.
- Roundabouts are quicker. By eliminating the forced stops of signal intersections and left turns, 30-50 percent more traffic can continue to move through the intersection smoothly.
- Roundabouts are economical. Less fuel is wasted idling at a stop light and the elimination of signal maintenance and electricity saves about $5,000 annually.
SAFETY TIPS
- Drivers approaching the roundabout should yield before entering.
- The roundabout functions as a circular intersection. Those drivers making a right turn should stay in the outside lane. Those making a left turn should move to the inside lane. Last, those going straight ahead should remain in the lane in which they entered
